Getting Intentional about Social and Emotional Learning: Promise, Progress, and Priorities
February 9, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
| FreeHere is an opportunity to take part in a symposium hosted by the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Youth Development. The event is free, and open to the public, but registration is required. If you’re unable to attend in person, you may take part in the online webinar.
At our capstone to the social and emotional learning symposium series, Dr. Dale Blyth will offer reflections on the opportunities and challenges of intentionally improving social and emotional learning both within and beyond the classroom. We will also showcase several current Minnesota efforts to increase capacity and support social and emotional learning:
- Rachel Oberg-Hauser, Community Impact Program Manager, Greater Twin Cities United Way will describe Propel SEL, an opportunity for youth workers, mentoring leaders, youth and community members to come together to inspire young peoples’ social and emotional skill development.
- Heather Hirsch, School Safety Technical Assistance Center, Minnesota Department of Education will speak to MDE’s forthcoming SEL competencies and guides.
- Kate Walker, UMN Extension Specialist, will discuss our SEL trainings and a free online companion toolkit that can be used with staff and youth to increase intentional practices to support SEL.
- Michelle Walker, Executive Director, Generation Next will share ways Generation Next is supporting their 6th goal to ensure that every child is socially and emotionally equipped to learn by 8th grade.
Finally, Jen Mein will host a World Café to engage our in-person participants in generating ideas for advancing and better supporting social and emotional learning for young people and the adults working with them.
