Short Description

Adds language to allow youth over age 18 to re-enter foster care if they had left foster care within six months of their 18th birthday.

Key Points

  • Youth have previously been allowed to re-enter foster care if they had been in foster care for six consecutive months prior to their 18th birthday. This bill would also allow for youth to re-enter foster care if they had left foster care within six months after their 18th birthday, up to age 21.
  • Eliminates the clause stipulating that agencies may allow youth to re-enter care if funds are available and replaces the word “may” with the word “must,” meaning that agencies do not have discretion for determining whether they will allow youth to re-enter care, but requires that it be approved when requested.
