Although many legislators and researchers agree that both legislation and research would be improved if they collaborated more, there are few successful examples of such partnerships. To gain a better understanding of the policymaker perspective, 20 state legislators were interviewed using open-ended questions via telephone. The survey was intended to learn more about policymakers’ views on research, its utility in their work, their experience with researchers and their opinions about a proposed model (Family Policy Fellows) increasing communication. This proposed model would bring a small group of policymakers, researchers and practitioners together over the course of a year to study specific issues.
