In module one, the authors share some background information on Health Literacy as a social determinant of health in Asian American Immigrants. Health literacy has recently emerged as an important social determinant of health outcomes as a result of its significant association with physical and mental health disparity. In module two, the authors focus on parents’ health literacy and its link to children’s health and mental health service utilization and outcomes in Asian and Latino American immigrants.
Health Literacy is described as the “Degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” (Ratzan and Parker, 2000, p. vi).
